Choosing a man's ring

When you are buying a ring for a man, it is very important to consider his sense of style. Men are in some ways pickier about their jewelry than women; they wear less of it and often find fewer colors or styles acceptable.

While birthstones are popular gifts for women, few men care what their birthstone is. Consider instead what he likes to wear.

For professionals, a conservative ring with onyx, diamond or a simple design in gold is best. Men's rings in these styles are easily found, and if he is going to wear a ring, this is probably the safest category to consider.

You won't see many other gemstones set in rings for men, in fact. Sapphire is somewhat less common in men's rings than the above styles, but is probably the next most common for men, followed by garnet. You may be able to see the pattern already that the colors are subdued for men's rings in most cases.

Next, you want to ensure that the ring is durable. A lightweight ring won't last too long for most men, and is often less comfortable than a ring with a bit of weight. Make sure the shank (the part of the ring that goes under the finger) is thick. Any gemstones should be set low to the ring and be well protected, whether by sturdy prongs, channel setting, inset or otherwise protected from the daily wear and tear they are sure to be exposed to.

Unlike women's rings, diamonds and gemstones set in a man's ring are not set for maximum brilliance and fire. They are set to protect the stone from the damage or loss.

Finally, if he has another ring or so, look at what he enjoys wearing. Most men wear one ring, two tops, and even if they have more do not switch them very often. Be certain he would appreciate your gift.
