But what size does she wear?

One of the trickiest things about surprising a woman with an engagement ring is knowing what size to buy her. Fortunately, there are ways to get a close approximation of her ring size.

If she wears a ring on her right hand ring finger, its size will be similar to that of her left. Generally speaking, for a right-handed woman, the left will be a quarter to a half size smaller, depending on how dominent the right hand is. Most will be a half size smaller. A size difference of a full ring size is relatively unusual.

On the other hand (literally!) if she is left handed, then her left ring finger will be somewhat larger than the right. This may not be as prominent a difference, as most lefties have to use their right hands more than a right-handed person uses their left, simply because many everyday tools are made for the right hand.

OK, great, you say, but I don't know that size either.

Not a problem. There are ways to get that size, so long as she has rings she wears on her right ring finger. Which tactic you use will depend on whether or not you will be able to borrow one of her rings without her noticing for a few hours or if you simply cannot sneak it out of the house safely.

If you can borrow a ring without getting caught (this assumes you are going for the complete surprise), then take a ring she wears on her right hand and have a jeweler measure its size. Get the ring back in its box before she knows it's gone. You now have a fair estimate of the size you will need to buy for her engagement ring.

Can't borrow a ring? These tactics are not as accurate, but they're a good start when you're going for the surprise.

If you can try one of her rings on your pinky finger (for most men), you can use that to go to the jeweler's and get a very rough estimate of her ring size. As the ring typically stops on a joint, this is not terribly accurate, but will get you some idea.

Another option is to look at her hands, then take a friend whose hands are of a similar size to the store and get her left ring finger measured. Once again, not terribly accurate, but a start. It is truly difficult to guess a ring size.

The most accurate measurement can be had if you are not going for the complete surprise. Take her ring shopping at the mall and have the store measure her finger. This also has the advantage of letting you see what she likes. Make sure you shop around, of course, and look for deals online before you buy. If you really want to surprise her, make it playful, a sort of whimsical stop at the jewelry counter. She'll suspect, of course, but you'll still be able to surprise her.

When you shop online, make sure you visit Mondera. You can create your own diamond engagement ring there, and get free sizing (within 45 days of shipment, excludes cost of shipping) if the ring doesn't fit after. You can request any size at time of purchase, so be ready to select a ring size when you order. If you cannot find your size when you order, be certain to contact customer service to be certain that the ring can be had in the size you desire.
