There comes a time with every piece of jewelry that repair is necessary. Maybe a stone is loose, maybe the shank has broken, or maybe there's another problem. Now you face the challenge of finding a jeweler you can trust to repair your jewelry.
Obviously, you need someone knowledgeable about jewelry overall. If the jeweler owns the store, he or she is probably a good jeweler. However, take a good look at the merchandise in the store before handing over your jewelry for repair. If the display is sloppy or the merchandise is not of good quality, go elsewhere for repair work.
Ask friends and family who they have used for repairs. Word of mouth is a great way to find a good jeweler. You should also check with the BBB for any complaints. A jeweler will probably also belong to one or more professional organizations.
If the repair won't take too long, feel free to ask if it can be done while you wait. While this is not always possible, particularly if the store is busy, it can be worth asking. Many repairs can be done in an hour or so.
When you leave your jewelry with a jeweler for repair, make sure the repair order has an excellent description and sketch of the item, including its estimated value. Any diamonds of at least 0.25 carats should have a description of their most obvious flaws, as a form of identification. You should also get an estimate for the cost of the repairs to be done. The amount of time it should take to repair the item and how long you have to pick it up should also be specified.
Ask before you leave what happens if your item is lost or stolen. The store should have insurance to protect you in such an instance.
Finally, when you pick up the item from being repaired, look it over carefully and make sure you are satisfied. You should not see much evidence of the repair; ideally any evidence at all. When work is done on the shank of a ring, there will sometimes be a small, thin line where the work was done; nothing more than that, and it may not be present at all if the jeweler did an excellent job. Make sure all the stones look as you remember them and match their descriptions.
Be sure you understand any warranty on the repair of your jewelry.
