Amethyst is a form of quartz which is purple. It includes all ranges of purple, not just the classic deep purple seen most often in jewelry stores. There may be a rose tone to it as well.
Due to its purple color, it has often been used by royalty.
Amethyst may be found in geodes or as large crystals.
Amethyst is reasonably hard, and so may be worn daily. Most amethyst on the market is heat treated, which causes the stone to permanently darken, and this is acceptable.
Amethyst on occasion forms in the same piece of quartz as citrine, creating a gemstone that is purple on one end and yellow on the other. Such stones are called ametrine. They are not often used in jewelry, but are fascinating stones nonetheless.
Amethyst is thought to help prevent drunkeness, overcome addiction and prevent insomnia. It also considered to have the power to increase psychic ability, happiness and healing. It is the stone of the 4th, 6th and 17th anniversaries and the birthstone of February.
